Rent vs Buy an AC in Mumbai

A quality 1.5-ton convertible split AC (with an energy rating of 3 stars) costs ₹28,000 and ₹45,000 to buy in India. If you resell it in 2-3 years of purchase, you can recover ₹12,000 - ₹18,000.

Scenario	Buy a 1.5-ton convertible AC (3-star)	Rent from Rentomojo (12 months)
Upfront cost	₹30,000	One-time refundable security deposit
Monthly cost	₹0	₹2229/mo
Resale value at exit	₹12,000–₹15,000	Nil
Effective net cost	₹15,000–₹18,000	₹26,748 + deposit
Maintenance if damaged	Covered by the user	Covered by Rentomojo
Total paid over 12 months	₹30,000	₹26,748 (₹2,229 × 12)

Bottom line: Renting a 1.5-ton convertible AC for 12 months costs ₹26,748 (₹2,229/month) with no large upfront cost and maintenance covered throughout. Buying the same AC requires ₹30,000 upfront (though resale after a year recovers ₹12,000–₹15,000, leaving a net loss of ₹15,000–₹18,000). For anyone unsure about how long they will stay in Mumbai, renting eliminates the resale and upfront worries.
