Rentomojo is committed to delivering the most accurate and reliable data to everyone. With the AQI calculator, you can access precise, real-time air quality data near you to understand your environment and make informed lifestyle decisions.
The AQI full form is Air Quality Index which is an effective tool that helps you understand the current air quality. It relies on complex data from various pollutants and converts it into a single value along with colour and nomenclature. Different countries use different air quality indices to assess air quality at a location. Every country’s air quality index chart is based on its national standards.
The AQI in India comprises six categories to communicate the air quality; the Indian AQI (CPCB) ranges from 0 (good) to 500 (severe). The air quality chart shows Good, Satisfactory, Moderately Polluted, Poor, Very Poor, and Severe. The AQI calculator uses eight major pollutants: PM10, PM2.5, NO₂, SO₂, CO, O₃, NH₃, and Pb. To calculate AQI in India, it’s essential to measure at least three pollutants.
For each pollutant, the sub-index is calculated using its measured concentration through a linear formula. For example, for PM₂.₅, the sub-index may be 40 at 25 µg/m³, 85 at 55 µg/m³, and 120 at 75 µg/m³. The highest sub-index among all pollutants becomes the overall AQI value.
AQI Category |
AQI Range |
Likely Health Impacts |
Good |
0–50 |
Minimal impact on health. Air quality is considered satisfactory. |
Satisfactory |
51–100 |
Minor breathing discomfort for very sensitive individuals. |
Moderately Polluted |
101–200 |
Breathing discomfort may occur for people with lung or heart disease, children, and older adults. |
Poor |
201–300 |
Increased breathing discomfort among people with lung or heart conditions. |
Very Poor |
301–400 |
Respiratory illness is likely; prolonged exposure may affect healthy individuals as well. |
Severe |
401–500 |
Serious health impacts even on healthy individuals; significant risk for people with existing diseases. |
With Rentomojo’s new Air Quality Calculator, checking your current air quality becomes simpler and more accessible. Our AQI calculator uses data from an air quality monitor that tracks major pollutants in real time. Each pollutant level is then converted into a sub-index using India’s official AQI breakpoints.
The highest sub-index among all pollutants determines the final AQI value. Our tool lets you instantly check the Air Quality Index in your current location and understand what the number means; moreover, it follows the standard guidelines of the World Air Quality Index. This streamlined system transforms detailed pollution readings into one clear AQI score, helping you easily check AQI levels, assess your environment, and make better decisions.
In India, an AQI level up to 100 is generally considered safe for most people. The Good (0–50) and Satisfactory (51–100) categories indicate low pollution levels and minimal health risk. When checking the air quality at your location, it is safe if the AQI stays within this range. Sensitive groups should still stay alert at the higher end of the satisfactory category, but overall exposure remains acceptable.
An AQI above 100 moves into Moderately Polluted or worse, where health effects become noticeable, especially for vulnerable individuals. When the air quality in your area crosses 200, the environment becomes unhealthy, and exposure should be limited. Levels above 300 fall into the Severe category, where the impact extends to the entire population. Regularly monitoring AQI allows you to make informed decisions about the air quality in your location.

Air purifiers work effectively when the air quality index is high, especially during spikes in pollution from dust, household pollutants, and pollen. With HEPA and carbon filters, air purification systems can capture fine particles (PM2.5 or PM10) and harmful gases. Air purifiers can help maintain indoor air quality when the outdoor conditions exceed the normal AQI levels. Here are the benefits of using air purifiers:
With the increasing AQI in India, maintaining clean indoor air quality is essential.
